What is the European Youth Card?

The Youth Card is a card that offers discounts and services to young people while they are within autonomous communities or countries of the European Union.

It is valid for one year and can be renewed until 26 or 31, depending on the country of residence. At the same time, its cost varies according to the country where you make the request.

It has two modalities: a conventional youth card, where you do not need a bank account, and financial youth card, which is associated with a bank account and can be used as a debit or credit card. Both modalities can be used in the member countries of the program.

Said card helps young people to travel around Europe since it offers discounts on travel tickets, accommodation, and food establishments. For this reason, it has free travel assistance insurance.

Other values are related to the educational field, such as cultural and leisure events, courses and workshops, and sports activities.

Who can apply for the European Youth Card?

Any person between 14 and 30 of the age of any nationality wishes to travel through Europe. Residents of EYCA member countries must apply at the offices in their country. At the same time, the rest of the applicants must do it online on their website.

European Youth Card discounts

As we mentioned, the youth card offers multiple discounts on products and services. These apply to travel, culture, accommodation, education, products, and services in 36 countries.

Each member country of the program has, in turn, hundreds of opportunities and programs for volunteering, learning, entrepreneurship, and employment, among the most common.

In general, the significant discounts and services offered are the following:

  • Transportation
  • Accommodation in youth hostels
  • Cultural activities
  • Courses and training
  • Recreation and leisure centers
  • Shopping
  • Cinemas and theaters
  • Bars and restaurants
  • Sport activities

For example, if you are or travel to Spain, you can get discounts at establishments such as Hard Rock Café, Electroclash, sports associations, and youth accommodation, among many others.

Where to apply for the Youth Card?

To apply for the European youth card, it is not necessary to be a student, and it is available to all young people under 31 or 26 years of age, depending on their country of residence.

In the case of Spain, it benefits young people up to one day before their 31st birthday and is managed by Injury and the youth organizations of the Autonomous Communities.

Conventional Youth Card

To request this type of card, you need to contact the offices of the EYCA member organization in your country of origin. On its website, you will find the member organization’s contact details that correspond to you and the issuing points.

You must mention that you can process this card in person or online. For both modalities, you must fill out an application, which you can download online or in person at the office that corresponds to you and present your identity document (DNI), passport, or residence card.

Youth Financial Card

If you want a financial card, you must appear at the financial institution that corresponds to you, where you must consult the conditions of the card to choose the one that best suits your needs.

You must bring your DNI or equivalent and fill out the application form.

On the contrary, if you cannot attend, another person may request your card with an authorization signed in your name, the printed application duly filled out and signed, and a copy of your DNI. On the other hand, regardless of your modality, they will send you a digital youth card for your mobile.

Can I apply for the Youth Card if I am a foreigner?

If your country is not on the list of EYCA members, you can get the card and use it when you travel to one of the countries in the network. This is as long as you are under 31 years of age, regardless of your nationality.

To do this, you must enter the digital kiosk and select your country of residence. Next, you must fill in your information, such as name, date of birth, and email. Once you fill in your details, you will access the European youth card application.

Afterward, you must read and accept the terms and conditions. Finally, you must make the payment, with which you will receive a confirmation email with your card number and the link to download the app.

Renew the Youth Card

If you have a red card, you must upgrade to the yellow youth card since the red card is not homologated with the European youth card. So you will not be able to enjoy the benefits, discounts, and services.

Updating the card is completely free, and, in addition to giving you the physical version, they will provide you with a digital version. To renew it, you only need to present your DNI without taking or handing in the old card.
